Cakies, Cookies and “Crazy Eskimos”
Happy 4th of July to everyong from Anchorage, AK! Today turned out to be quite an experience. Stephanie and I awoke from our slumber to find that despite the passage of several hours the lighting outside had not changed! I honestly feel as if I have been an one perpetual day since Saturday morning. Getting used to this lighting is going to be crazy difficult. Anywho, enough with the boring stuff! Stephanie and I caught a cab to Walmart (the one that actually sells groceries). Who knew there were Walmarts that didn’t?? Certaintly I did not and it ended up costing us a nice cab fare indeed for my assumption :( Not to be discouraged by our misfortune we took the time to get some advice from the taxi driver. He told us of an 8 mile local hike to the top of a mountain called FlatTop where you get an amazing view of the city. Definitely made our to do list as he pointed it out in the far background. We also did a bit of exploring the area around Walmart to find the biggest mall in Alaska and a super yummy bagel shop that had the most amazing portabella and veggie wrap. We also got some amazing cookies (almond chocolate and pumpkin) that quite frankly brought a tear to my eye. I will DEFINITELY be revisiting this little bistro quite soon hopefully. This gave Stephanie and I a chance to just talk. I love this girl. She’s such an amazing person and I am so lucky to call her my friend :) Walmart was an experience…produce is UNREAL expensive (6 dollars and some odd cents for a bag of oranges). I can’t remember a time in my life when I’ve had so much fun just grocery shopping! This place is already starting to feel like home. We bought some things to make the place feel a bit more cozy and a little less well….dirty lol After coming home to find our other roomate (who is super sweet and offered to give us rides to places..yay), we finally unpacked and made a pizza. We decided tonight would be the best night to go see Eclipse. Kinda funny our first full night in Alaska that we choose to go see a movie but alas it was AMAZING! On our way back, we jumped into our cab when another person started arguing with the cab driver that we “stole his” cab. The driver tried to explain that it was me that had called but this guy just wasn’t giving up. As we were driving away the cab driver in broken english said he was “happy to have picked up you ladies instead of that crazy eskimo.” Needless to say I almost peed myself laughing at this guy. Ugh, with our first full day behind us I bid everyone a fond goodnight! Hopefully tomorrow we can begin exploring. Did you know that 1900 moose, 250 black bears and 65 brown bears call Anchorage home? With some luck maybe Steph and I will run across some of these critters!
